Event details

The Point of Care Foundation has a long track record in improving families’ experiences of maternity and newborn care. From our work as part of the national Better Births review to our international collaboration with the Vermont Oxford Network of Neonatal Units in the USA to our research partnerships in the UK.  We are now pleased to offer a tailor-made EBCD for maternity and newborn care course. This builds on our experience working with more than 25 maternity and newborn services over the last 10 years. If you would like to see some of the projects we supported in neonatal care, have a look here.

It also brings our focus on experience of staff working in or training to work in maternity and newborn care through Schwartz Rounds. For a taste of how our work relates to the experiences of those working in these most challenging of environments, please have a look at how Schwartz Rounds can help.

The EBCD course offers structured training in family-centred service design techniques and quality improvement. It is open to anyone with an interest in co-design, patient and family involvement. It is appropriate for clinical and non-clinical staff, researchers and patient partners. The course is supported by free access to our newly launched maternity care EBCD online toolkit.

The Point of Care Foundation has been running Experience Based Co-Design (EBCD) workshops for the last 10 years. At these events, participants learn how to draw on the experiences of patients, carers and staff to identify where change is needed and then to design and implement improvements together. We have now launched a tailored course specifically focusing on maternity care. It is suitable for all maternity services, including the experiences of families in obstetric operating theatres, and families whose babies are admitted to neonatal care.

The Covid-19 pandemic drove rapid changes in the way services were delivered. However, in the midst of a fast-paced response to the crisis, families were left behind and not involved in the change process.  We also know about the extent of moral distress felt by staff who are not able to offer care in the way they would like. Our programme offers techniques for addressing some of these issues.

How can we help?

We run the EBCD course as a a one-day in-person event in Central London or as a 4 x 2 hour weekly online workshops. We also run bespoke EBCD courses and offer a train the trainer model which has the benefit of generating capacity and upskilling core team members to cascade this approach within an organisation. If you would like to speak to a member of the team about bespoke EBCD or train the trainer courses please fill out this enquiry form.

Who can benefit?

The beauty of co-design is that all sorts of people can be involved in whatever way suits them. This can range from leading a project or sitting on a steering group, to sharing their experience of giving or receiving care, or being part of a small co-design team. The discipline or level is not important – only the commitment to working collaboratively to make experiences better for staff, patients, and families.

What participants gain from the programme:

  • Structured training in user-centred service design techniques that you will come back to again and again
  • Tuition in how to capture the experiences of family members and staff through discussion, observation, and filmed interviews (including options for doing this remotely)
  • Access to real life examples of successful co-design projects in maternity and newborn care
  • Comprehensive study materials and practical guidelines
  • Ongoing support throughout your project
  • Membership of our thriving EBCD Community of Practice which includes free networking and peer support events
  • CPD certified course
