Workforce reports: a digest

20 March 2019

The last year has seen a steady stream of reports from national bodies and professional organisations on the state of the health and social care workforce, with recommendations about healthy organisational cultures, healthy workplaces and active support for staff.

We are signposting them here in the hope that it’s useful for our supporters to have easy access to these important resources:

  1. The King’s Fund, the Nuffield trust and The Health Foundation, 2018, The Healthcare Workforce in England
  2. NHS England, Long Term Plan
  3. Briefing on the results of the 2018 NHS Staff Survey
  4. Health Education England, Mental Health Commission Report
  5. NHS Employers 2018, Workforce Health and Well-being framework
  6. Skills for care 2018, The State of the Adult Social care Sector Workforce in England
  7. CQC 2018, The State of Health care and Adult Social care in England
  8. BMA 2018, Bullying and Harassment in the NHS: Policy recommendations

Jocelyn Cornwell, Chief Executive, comments:

“We welcome the attention that is now being paid to these important issues nationally. The substantial body of research evidence demonstrating that staff experience shapes patients’ experience of care, makes us doubly concerned about the increasing and – in some cases – intolerable pressures on staff. We are concerned about the staff themselves and also for patients, because if staff are stressed and demoralised, they are less likely to be mentally and emotionally available to patients.”
